Art Mirrors Culture
Reston Multicultural Festival
Intergenerational Exhibit

September 3 - October 5

Mysterious-Elephant (India) by Juliet Philip

To help celebrate the September 27th Reston Multicultural Festival on Lake Anne Plaza, area artists are displaying works of art that relate to their cultural heritage.  The question “How does art mirror culture in your work?” was asked of Jo Ann Rose Gallery artists.  What artists say about art and culture will be displayed along with their work. Japan, India, Russia, Africa (Mozambique) and Vietnam are just some of the countries represented in the exhibit. Visit the exhibit during the entire month of September and stop by on Saturday, September 27 during the Reston Multicultural Festival, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lake Anne Plaza.

Art Mirrors Culture
Reston Multicultural Festival
Intergenerational Exhibit

September 3 - November 21

During this three-month exhibit, area artists are exhibiting three-dimensional pieces in a variety of media – including ceramics, sculpture, mosaics, stained glass and wood work – to celebrate the many facets of culture.  In response to the question “How does art mirror culture in your work?” 3D artists wrote a few words that will be placed in the glass cases along with their artwork.  Visit any time RCC Lake Anne is open from September 4 through November 21 and stop by on Saturday, September 27 during the Reston Multicultural Festival, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lake Anne Plaza.

Hunters Woods Exhibit:

September 2014

Heaven and Earth –

Artists: Arnold Lopes, Sally Stephenson,
Emilse Wolff

September 1 - 30

Sally Stephenson paints in acrylics on canvas. Her style is impressionistic and her subject matter sensibly earthbound. Local landscapes, animals, cherry blossoms and scenes from DC fill her petite canvases. Her paintings range from atmospheric to panda bears frolicking in the sun.

Emilse Wolff paints with soft pastels in brilliant color. Like Sally, Emilse has both her feet planted firmly on earth. Her subjects range from local landscapes to colorful animals to wonderfully brassy sunsets. Her keen eye for portraiture is also on display.

Arnold Lopes paints in acrylics and is fearless when it comes to larger formats. Unlike Sally and Emilse, Arnold's head is way out in space - far from planet earth. Arnold is fascinated with celestial elements and depicts planets, moons and stars in photographic realism surrounded by abstract forms and the occasional surreal quirk.

Ann Barbieri, the judge for this exhibit, is a Reston artist whose use of lively color is well-known.  Starting with a scene from nature or an interior, Ann often works on paper and incorporates collage to achieve varied textures. Ann studied art at UCLA and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows and won several awards. See more about Ann at www.annbarbieri.com.

This year’s theme is Imagist:  Artists are invited to provide poetry or prose to add a dimension to their work and deepen the viewer’s understanding of their vision. The exhibit includes paintings and mixed media works.

The League of Reston Artists is a non-profit organization open to all Washington DC Metro art lovers and has been an important part of the Reston community for over 45 years.  It provides opportunities for artists at every stage of their development, from emerging to professional.  Each year new members join and volunteers coordinate fresh opportunities to partner with local businesses and display artwork produced by area artists. LRA has been exhibiting in the Jo Ann Rose Gallery since its inception in fall of 1999.  Visit their website, www.leagueofrestonartists.com for current information.

Artists: Jerry Lewis and Mohsen Alashmoni
Exhibit Dates:  October 1 – October 31
Location:  RCC Hunters Woods
Contacts: Jerry Lewis jeelewis2003@yahoo.com
Mohsen Alashmoni  Mohsen.maadirunners@gmail.com

Mohsen Alashmoni, from Cairo, Egypt, and Jerry Lewis from Reston, Virginia, met in Cairo and became running companions and close friends when Jerry lived in Egypt from 2000 to 2003. Their side-by-side painting started after Jerry and Mohsen ran the Rome Marathon in 2005 and continued every year thereafter. Subsequent opportunities for them to jointly paint city landmarks were after marathons in Prague, Milan, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Marseilles and Trieste. Most paintings are in pen and ink & watercolor. A few were finished when they returned home. This is the first time their paintings are being exhibited side-by-side.
