THEATRE, ARTS & EVENTS Saturday, January 19 Events Community Service Projects 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Join friends and neighbors in honoring Dr. King's legacy by serving your community. As Dr. King said, "Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve." RCC is thrilled to be partnering with the Southgate Community Center, Reston Association, Reston Interfaith, and The Closet on Community Service Projects. Indoor projects include making bag lunches for the Embry Rucker Community Shelter, sorting and organizing items from The Closet, and putting together recycling and trash enclosures for use at the basketball courts and pathways in the area of Southgate Community Center. There will also be an outdoor project, weather permitting, cleaning up the natural areas, pathways, and hardscape surrounding the area. When everything is done around noon, volunteers will gather together and share lunch that will be provided. Sorting donations is for ages 13 and up. Children 12 and younger are welcome to participate in the other projects, but they must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. The Reston Community Orchestra will present its annual Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday afternoon, January 19. This year's presentation will feature the music of Reston resident Brian Scarbrough. There will be a wide range of compositions from symphonic selections to upbeat original tunes for jazz quartet. Also included in the program will be a premiere of a work for a vocal soloist drawn from the writings of Dr. King. A special feature will be a presentation by popular song stylist, Beverly Cosham, well known for her community involvement in Reston and her longtime association with the RCO. The 90-minute program will be under the direction of Maestro Dingwall Fleary. |
