Oil Paintings by Richard Neff and Art Quilts by Ava Neff

Richard Neff, a former mathematics professor, and Ava Neff, lifelong creator of art quilts, present BEHOLD: THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH! at RCC Hunters Woods, June 1-30. The exhibit features Richard’s landscape oil paintings, encaustic paintings and portraits, and studies of famous paintings in the National Gallery of Art. Ava’s art quilts are complex and colorful, some even mirroring Richard’s oils. Her quiltmaking carries on a tradition that began several generations ago.

Richard Neff, a mathematics major, took an oil painting class in college and began a lifelong journey of putting oil to canvas. After spending the next 30 years teaching mathematics, he retired from Messiah College in Grantham, PA, in 1998. Anticipating being able to spend more time on art in retirement, he audited several art classes while still at the college. In 2009, Richard and wife Ava moved to Virginia to be closer to family. Here, Richard found a richly rewarding endeavor as a copyist for the National Gallery of Art while continuing to pursue his art. He loves to paint local landscape scenes in oil.

Throughout more than 50 years as an artist, Richard has been a member of many art groups. He enjoys being part of a local group of plein air artists: “I enjoy going out into the field and being inspired and challenged to capture some of the beautiful scenery.” Inspired by the master Impressionists, Richard seeks to capture the beauty of nature in new ways. The exhibit features Richard’s landscape oil paintings, some encaustic paintings and portraits, and studies of famous paintings in the National Gallery of Art.

Richard enjoys tennis, vegetable gardening and playing and singing bluegrass and old-time music. “I play banjo and sing in two local bands – The Down Home Radio Band and The Difficult Run String Band,” Richard says.

Ava’s art quilts are complex and colorful, some even mirroring Richard’s oils. She finds quilting to be a very creative and relaxing pastime. “Quilting is an art that dates back many generations,” Ava says, “I am fortunate to have quilts that were made by my great grandmother, both of my grandmothers, and one of my husband’s grandmothers. All are treasured and are a way of connecting with the past.”

Ava Neff has been creating art quilts for many years. While living in Pennsylvania, she exhibited at the LeTort Quiltfest for more than 10 years. For many years, she has been donating several pieces to the PA Relief Sale sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee. Her pieces have hung at the Grantham Church annual Arts Weekend. Ava has submitted pieces in competition at the Art Center School and Galleries in Mechanicsburg, PA. Her quilts have received first place and honorable mention awards in the textile category.

In the DC area, Ava has shown her work at Paint Branch UU Church, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, United States Geological Survey and Green Spring Gardens, as well as with the Vienna Art Society. Ava has taken workshops with nationally known teachers and has attended week-long quilting workshops five different years at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV.
